Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis officially opened the newly upgraded Wesfleur Athletics Stadium in Atlantis on 25 February following a major R31 million refurbishment aimed at strengthening community sport and recreation.

The extensive upgrade includes a full replacement of the tartan running track, improvements to the steeplechase arena, long and triple jump areas, hammer throw cage and javelin facilities, as well as upgraded floodlights. Seating areas, walkways, ablution facilities and spectator fencing were also repaired, alongside the installation of a new perimeter fence.

Speaking at the opening, Mayor Hill-Lewis said the investment goes beyond infrastructure, focusing on creating safer and healthier communities through accessible sporting spaces. Well-maintained facilities, he noted, provide young people with positive opportunities while supporting active lifestyles.

The Wesfleur Athletics Stadium has also been identified as a future Regional Recreation Hub, with additional improvements planned in the coming years.

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham, highlighted the role of quality sports facilities in keeping youth engaged and promoting community wellbeing, encouraging residents to make use of and safeguard the upgraded venue.

The facility continues to support athletics federations, schools, clubs and provincial partners, reinforcing its importance within the broader regional sports ecosystem.

The upgrade forms part of wider investment into community recreation infrastructure, with major improvements recently completed at Blue Downs Athletics Stadium, Manenberg’s ‘The Greens’ Sports Ground, Fisantekraal Sports Ground and Bishop Lavis Sports Ground — collectively expanding access to modern, safe sporting spaces across Cape Town communities.
