Madlala-Routledge Honoured for Justice Leadership

A lifetime dedicated to justice, peace and ethical leadership has earned Dr Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge an honorary doctorate from the University of Strathclyde.

Madlala-Routledge, who serves as Board Chairperson of the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, was awarded the degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa in recognition of her contribution to public service, human rights, democratic accountability and peacebuilding.

Her journey has spanned resistance to apartheid, imprisonment, participation in South Africa’s democratic transition and years of public service. Her work has also included advocacy around HIV and AIDS, women’s rights, ethical governance and peacebuilding.

The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation said the recognition reflects a career shaped by the willingness to act according to principle, even when doing so came at a personal or political cost.

“It is a fitting tribute to a leader whose life has consistently demonstrated that true leadership is measured not by position or power, but by the courage to act with integrity, particularly when the cost of doing so is high,” the Institute said.

Madlala-Routledge’s contribution to South Africa’s public life has extended across government and civil society. Throughout her career, she has remained closely associated with questions of accountability, human dignity and the role of leadership in strengthening democratic institutions.

In accepting the honorary degree, she described education as “a tool of liberation” and challenged graduates to use their knowledge in service of others rather than simply as a pathway to status.

Her address also placed emphasis on empathy and Ubuntu as important foundations for creating more inclusive and humane societies.

These ideas closely reflect the work of the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, which focuses on building fair, democratic and inclusive societies across Africa.

The Institute said Madlala-Routledge’s message to graduates also speaks to a broader responsibility facing institutions and individuals working in social justice and development.

“Your challenge to graduates to make their learning an instrument of service rather than status resonates equally with all of us who seek to build societies rooted in inclusion, dignity and reconciliation,” the Institute said.

Her recognition comes as societies around the world continue to grapple with questions of inequality, conflict, social division and declining trust in institutions.

The Institute believes leadership rooted in integrity, compassion and accountability remains essential to addressing these challenges.

“At IJR, we have had the privilege of witnessing your commitment to social justice and ethical leadership at close hand,” the organisation said.

“We thank you for your exemplary leadership, your generosity of spirit, and your lifelong dedication to building a more compassionate, equitable and peaceful world.”

The honorary doctorate recognises not only Madlala-Routledge’s contribution to South Africa’s democratic journey, but also her continued work towards justice and reconciliation internationally.

For the Institute, the recognition provides an opportunity to celebrate a leader whose career demonstrates the connection between public service and social impact.

The Institute said it hopes the honour will also inspire future generations of leaders to approach education, leadership and public service as opportunities to contribute to society.

As Board Chairperson of the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, Madlala-Routledge continues to contribute to efforts aimed at advancing peace, justice, dignity and reconciliation in South Africa and beyond.
