Rescued Donkeys Find Hope Again

The Karoo Donkey Sanctuary has transformed the lives of rescued donkeys through lifelong care, giving abused, abandoned and neglected animals a safe place to heal and thrive.

Behind every rescued donkey at the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary is a story of survival, resilience and compassion. From animals abandoned after years of hard labour to mothers fighting to keep their newborns alive during devastating droughts, the sanctuary is proving that every life deserves a second chance.

The sanctuary, located in the heart of the Karoo, currently provides lifelong care to more than 140 rescued donkeys, alongside horses, cattle and other farm animals that have suffered neglect, abuse, abandonment or exploitation.

One of its most remarkable rescue stories is that of Cloud Dancer and her newborn foal, Munchkin.

The pair were discovered during one of the Karoo’s worst droughts after being dragged along a national road in an exhausted attempt to find food and water. Cloud Dancer was severely malnourished, dehydrated and barely able to stand, yet she continued protecting her week-old foal despite her own deteriorating condition.

Following their rescue, both animals received intensive veterinary care, specialised nutrition and constant monitoring.

Months later, Cloud Dancer had regained her strength while Munchkin had grown into a healthy, energetic young donkey. Today they continue to live together safely at the sanctuary, enjoying open paddocks, nutritious food and the security of permanent care.

Another story that has touched caregivers is that of Rebekka, an elderly mule found wandering the streets of a small Karoo town searching desperately for water.

Partially blind, lame and severely dehydrated, Rebekka carried deep scars across her body after spending years pulling heavy carts with poorly fitted harnesses. Her injuries reflected a lifetime of relentless work and neglect.

After arriving at the sanctuary, Rebekka received veterinary treatment, proper nutrition and, for the first time in years, the opportunity simply to rest.

Today she spends her days grazing peacefully alongside other rescued animals, free from hardship and surrounded by dedicated caregivers.

“Our mission is to provide lifelong care, dignity and safety to animals who have nowhere else to go. These stories remind us why that work is so important,” says Karoo Donkey Sanctuary Founder and CEO Jonno Sherwin.

Beyond individual rescues, the sanctuary also plays a leading role in protecting South Africa’s donkey population through advocacy, education and campaigns against the illegal donkey skin trade.

Recognised as Africa’s largest and only internationally verified equine sanctuary, the organisation continues working to improve the welfare of working donkeys while creating greater awareness of responsible animal care.

Sherwin says every rescue depends on the generosity of donors, sponsors and volunteers.

“These success stories belong not only to the animals, but to every person who chooses to stand alongside us. Without public support, many of these animals would never receive a second chance.”

Members of the public can support the sanctuary through monthly virtual adoptions, donations, sponsorships or volunteering, helping ensure that more vulnerable animals receive the safety, compassion and lifelong care they deserve.
