Single Mom Builds Support App

A South African single mother has launched a free app connecting women raising children alone, creating digital support networks focused on encouragement, belonging and community empowerment.

South African author and entrepreneur Melinta Iyaloo has launched La Luma, a free digital platform designed to connect and support single mothers across the country.

Built without technical experience or corporate backing, the app was created from Iyaloo’s own lived experience as a single mother raising two children while studying and working full-time. Determined to create the kind of support system she once needed herself, she used her personal resources to bring the platform to life.

“I know what it feels like to have no one to call at 3am,” says Iyaloo. “That loneliness stays with you. But it doesn’t have to be that way. La Luma is my answer to that silence.”

La Luma functions as a digital community space where single mothers can connect with others facing similar challenges, share advice and encouragement, access emotional support, and build meaningful relationships regardless of where they live.

Iyaloo says the platform was intentionally designed to be accessible and completely free so that mothers in both urban and rural communities could benefit from the service.

“This platform is where you come to be seen, to be supported, and to realise you are not the only one,” she says. “Let’s build a community together. That’s the heart of La Luma.”

Beyond the app, Iyaloo is also the author of 10 Things Nobody Tells You About Being A Single Mum (But We’ll Laugh About It Anyway), a book aimed at helping mothers navigate the emotional realities of parenting through honesty and humour.

As she prepares to complete her BBA qualification, Iyaloo says her message remains simple: every single mother deserves support, community and a place where she belongs.
