Telkom’s SATNAC spotlights AI and sustainability

Telkom is calling for South Africa to accelerate its digital transformation by investing in secure next-generation infrastructure, artificial intelligence and sustainable technology systems that support long-term national development. Speaking at SATNAC, Dr Mmaki Jantjies, Telkom’s Group Executive for Innovation and Transformation and SATNAC Chairperson, emphasised that the country’s progress depends on strengthening both technical capacity and human capital.

According to Jantjies, Telkom’s investments in SATNAC and its Centres of Excellence are aimed at building the digital foundations required for South Africa to compete in a rapidly advancing global technology landscape. “Our investment in SATNAC and our research Centres of Excellence demonstrates Telkom’s commitment to building digital infrastructure, nurturing talent and advancing knowledge creation across Africa,” she said.

Jantjies noted that Telkom’s partnerships with the National Research Foundation and multiple universities are enabling master’s and PhD students to conduct research aligned with South Africa’s most pressing digital challenges, including artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and next-generation networks. “These partnerships ensure that research is not only theoretical but also aligned with Telkom’s priority areas and the practical needs of industry. By funding skills development and offering internships, we are helping to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world application.”

She added that digital transformation must be people-centred to be effective. “For us, digital transformation is not just about technology, it’s about empowering people and ensuring that innovation is grounded in the realities of Africa. By investing in skills development, research, and open innovation, we are helping to shape a future where all Africans can participate in and benefit from the digital economy.”

Jantjies also highlighted South Africa’s opportunity to position itself as a leading research and innovation hub for the continent, emphasising that this requires coordinated collaboration across sectors. “This approach is essential for positioning South Africa as a research and innovation hub for the continent. We are deliberate about including historically disadvantaged institutions and ensuring that opportunities are accessible to all.”

Telkom’s message reinforces the need for national commitment to strong digital infrastructure, locally relevant AI solutions and inclusive skills development to drive a resilient digital future for South Africa.
