SA Guide-Dogs Launches 2025 “Give a Cane” Drive

After a successful debut last year, the South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind is back with the second annual Give a Cane Campaign, with a bold mission to double its impact in 2025. Kicking off on 12 May and running until 31 July, the campaign invites South Africans to contribute to the goal of distributing 1,000 white canes — vital tools that give people who are visually impaired the ability to move through life with independence and dignity.

In 2024, the campaign raised enough funds to supply 500 white canes, changing hundreds of lives across the country. Now, with the cost of a cane starting at just R50, the association is calling on individuals, businesses, and communities to step up and be part of something bigger — helping to unlock the world for even more people.

“A white cane is so much more than a mobility aid,” says Pieter van Niekerk, spokesperson for the SA Guide-Dogs Association and a white cane user himself. “It’s freedom, it’s dignity, and it’s the confidence to move independently.”

Real lives. Real stories.

The power of a simple white cane is best understood through the people whose lives it has touched.

  • Mtale Moodise, a gym enthusiast from Cosmo City, confidently walks to and from the gym every day with his cane.

  • Ceala, who lost her vision suddenly during her matric year, is now studying Psychology at the University of Pretoria.

  • Henrick, who went blind at eight, is currently a first-year Law student, with aspirations in cybersecurity.

Each of them credits their progress to a tool often overlooked — the white cane — and the support they received from the SA Guide-Dogs Association.

The science behind the cane

Unlike a standard walking stick, the white cane used by SA Guide-Dogs is a specialised mobility device. It features a rounded ball tip designed to detect changes in terrain and alert users to obstacles and cues such as tactile paving. More than just a mobility tool, it signals to others that the user is visually impaired — promoting safety and inclusion in public spaces.

How to get involved

You don’t need to make a large donation to make a difference. A simple R50 contribution brings someone one step closer to mobility and freedom. And there are countless creative ways to support the campaign:

  • Host a dress-up day, blindfold challenge, or walk-a-thon at work or school

  • Start a R50 donation challenge among colleagues

  • Encourage your book club or running group to contribute

  • Organise an online gaming fundraiser

  • Walk, run, or cycle 50km and get sponsored

  • Businesses can also donate — and benefit from Section 18A tax certificates

Join the movement

The 2025 Give a Cane Campaign is not just about canes — it’s about community. It’s about ensuring that no South African who is blind or visually impaired is left behind.

Donate now or set up your own fundraiser at www.guidedog.org.za/give-a-cane or visit the campaign page on GivenGain.

Let’s walk the road to inclusion together — one cane, one life, one R50 at a time.
