Local entrepreneur shines through development programme

The small Northern Cape town of Onseepkans is fast becoming a model for community-driven economic growth, as local entrepreneur Veronica Bostander continues to turn opportunity into enterprise success. Bostander, owner of Veron’s General Dealer, has emerged as one of the standout participants in the Grassroots Enterprise Development Programme, a small business initiative funded by Engie’s Konkoonsies II Solar PV Facility.

Bostander recently showcased her growing business at the Khai-Ma Entrepreneurial Day, a platform designed to connect local entrepreneurs with potential clients and business partners. Her participation marked a milestone for both her and the broader programme, which aims to strengthen small businesses operating in the Khai-Ma Municipality.

“The event gave me valuable exposure to new clients and stakeholders I can collaborate with in the future,” said Bostander. “It was a proud moment to be recognised as a local entrepreneur who has managed to build a sustainable business from the ground up.”

From modest beginnings, Bostander has developed a steady customer base across Onseepkans. Her store, known for its reliable daily service and popular braai plates sold at community sports events, has seen measurable financial growth — a direct outcome of structured training, mentorship, and discipline learned through the Grassroots programme.

According to Jeremy Prins, Social Performance Coordinator at Engie’s Konkoonsies II facility, Bostander’s progress illustrates the value of targeted investment in local enterprise. “From the start, Veronica showed total commitment to the training process,” said Prins. “She applies her learning with precision, keeps detailed records, and manages her finances and stock effectively. This level of dedication has translated into real financial stability.”

The Grassroots Enterprise Development Programme provides participants with practical training in business management, marketing, branding, and financial administration, as well as access to grant funding and mentorship. Its objective is to help small businesses become viable contributors to the local economy — a priority for both Engie and the Khai-Ma Municipality.

Prins said the municipality’s involvement is key to sustaining long-term growth. “Events like the Khai-Ma Entrepreneurial Day are vital. They give small businesses exposure to markets and partnerships that can accelerate local development,” he noted.

Beyond Bostander’s success, 16 other entrepreneurs are currently supported through the programme, representing diverse sectors including retail, catering, event planning, carpentry, beauty, and construction. Together, they form the backbone of a growing local economy that is being strengthened through renewable energy-linked social investment.

As South Africa continues to explore how infrastructure projects can deliver inclusive benefits, initiatives like the Grassroots Enterprise Development Programme are showing that solar energy can power more than homes — it can power opportunity, enterprise, and local economic transformation.
