Overjoyed Khayelitsha pupils cheer new borehole

Pupils at Impendulo Public Primary School in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, could not contain their excitement when the Gift of the Givers Foundation unveiled a brand-new borehole at the school on Thursday, March 23.

The organisation’s Gawa Sayed told News24 that the school had been battling since water restrictions were imposed in Cape Town.

“The [pupils] could hardly afford to bring bread to school. So to ask them to bring a bottle of water to school was impossible,” said Sayed.

The school caters for 1 350 underprivileged pupils.

The borehole of 35 metres, pumps 72 000 litres per hour, which amounts to 1 728 000 litres per day.

Sayed says a pump and filtration mechanism will be installed in the coming week.

“The community will also be benefiting as Gift of the Givers will be installing additional taps on the school’s boundary, for the community to collect drinkable water.”
