MTN Empowers Learners with 30,000 Devices

MTN South Africa, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT), has launched the ‘Connecting Every Child’ initiative, a national campaign that will distribute 30,000 smart devices to learners across the country. The programme is aimed at closing South Africa’s persistent digital divide and improving access to online learning.

The initiative supports the DBE’s 2019 pledge to provide every learner with an ICT device and digital learning resources, while also advancing the DCDT’s SA Connect programme, which seeks to expand broadband to underserved municipalities.

“Access to connectivity, devices and educational content is crucial for advancing education in our country,” said Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube, adding that the programme will accelerate efforts to improve digital literacy at school level.

Communications Minister Solomon Malatsi said the project aligns with government’s plan to build an inclusive information society. “To realise our goal of connecting every South African, every sector player must play their full part,” he said.

At the provincial level, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi described the initiative as a purposeful intervention to equip young people with tools for a future-ready economy.

MTN SA CEO Charles Molapisi confirmed the telecoms company has already donated 2,000 devices to launch the programme. He urged corporates, manufacturers, and individuals to support the campaign: “Without access to connectivity and e-learning devices, our children and future generations will be left behind.”

To enable contributions, MTN has partnered with Forgood, a platform that facilitates both monetary and in-kind donations. Devices will be distributed to schools in rural and underserved areas, with drop-off points also available at MTN regional offices.
