Make Animal Welfare Your New Year’s Priority

FOUR PAWS South Africa, a non-profit organisation specialising in animal welfare, is encouraging South Africans to make animal welfare a priority as they set their New Year’s resolutions. The organisation says that small, thoughtful changes in everyday behaviour can collectively help build a kinder, more sustainable future for animals, people and the planet.

According to Fiona Miles, Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa, focusing on animal welfare is one of the most impactful ways individuals can contribute to positive change. “Making animal welfare a focal point of our resolutions is a powerful way to create positive change for animals, whether through daily acts of kindness or broader lifestyle adjustments. Small, committed actions truly matter, and with a collective effort we can build a future where animals are treated with the respect and compassion they deserve,” she said.

FOUR PAWS’ action plan for South Africans in 2026

FOUR PAWS is encouraging South Africans to use its Animal Welfare Advocacy Guide as a practical toolkit for change, offering clear steps that can be applied at household and community level.

One of the organisation’s key messages is the #EatKinder approach, which encourages people to reduce animal products in their diets. Simple changes, such as trying a plant-based braai with local favourites like grilled mielies and chakalaka, can help reduce animal suffering while also lowering environmental impact.

FOUR PAWS is also urging consumers to support ethical, cruelty-free and animal-friendly brands, noting that everyday purchasing decisions can influence industry behaviour and promote more humane practices.

Advocacy is another important focus area. Through the Advocacy Guide, South Africans can learn how to engage with local government, support petitions and host awareness initiatives in their communities. The organisation also encourages people to educate and inspire others by sharing animal welfare knowledge with friends, schools and social groups.

Responsible pet ownership remains central to FOUR PAWS’ work. The organisation reminds pet owners of the importance of sterilisation, vaccination and microchipping, as well as keeping pets safe during firework season and providing proper care, enrichment and companionship.

Why FOUR PAWS says this matters

FOUR PAWS highlights that South Africa continues to face serious animal welfare challenges, including wildlife exploitation, factory farming and the suffering of stray and neglected animals. The organisation believes that compassionate, informed choices made by individuals and communities can play a meaningful role in addressing these challenges and promoting sustainable living.

The Animal Welfare Advocacy Guide provides practical support, including petition templates, guidance on ethical food and fashion choices, and tips for hosting community-based events that inspire positive action.
