Hyundai Automotive South Africa has announced a strategic partnership with former Springboks Rugby World Cup-winning captain John Smit, marking a collaboration rooted in leadership, integrity and long-term shared value.
The announcement was made at Hyundai’s Centurion dealership and attended by leading sporting, motoring and business media. The partnership brings together two respected South African brands, one from sport and one from business, both recognised for their commitment to excellence, accountability and nation-building.
Hyundai Automotive South Africa CEO Stanley Anderson said the partnership reflects the company’s focus on working with leaders who embody values that extend beyond performance alone.
“John Smit represents far more than sporting success. He is a proven leader whose journey from elite sport into business mirrors Hyundai’s own evolution as a brand focused on trust, consistency and long-term impact. This is not a sponsorship, but a strategic partnership grounded in shared principles and a common vision for the future,” Anderson said.
Smit, who captained South Africa to Rugby World Cup victory in 2007, is widely regarded as one of the country’s most influential rugby leaders. Since retiring from professional rugby, he has successfully transitioned into business, earning respect as a strategic thinker, entrepreneur and boardroom leader.
He said the partnership with Hyundai Automotive South Africa felt both natural and authentic.
“The values that shaped my rugby career, discipline, teamwork, resilience and accountability, are the same values I see reflected in Hyundai’s approach to business and leadership. From our first conversations, it was clear that this partnership is about more than brand alignment. It’s about purpose, people and progress,” Smit said.
As part of the partnership, Smit will contribute his leadership experience and commercial insight through participation in Hyundai business engagements, dealer initiatives and stakeholder interactions. The collaboration aims to strengthen leadership culture, support enterprise development and reinforce positive role modelling across both sport and business sectors.
Smit will also have use of the all-new Hyundai SANTA FE, a vehicle that reflects Hyundai’s focus on innovation, premium comfort and reliability. These qualities align with the partnership’s emphasis on sustainable performance and long-term value creation.
The partnership highlights how collaboration between business and sporting leadership can contribute to social capital development, inspire future leaders and reinforce responsible corporate citizenship, demonstrating how shared values can translate into meaningful impact beyond the boardroom or the field.
