September is Arbor month in South Africa. To celebrate this, Greenpop, a Cape Town based, non-profit organisation whose mission is to create green communities and plant trees across Sub-Saharan Africa, committed to planting 10 000 trees in September alone. This marks the launch of their goal to plant half a million trees by 2025. Greenpop said, “In response to the recent study showing that tree-planting is the best way to mitigate climate change, Greenpop aims to dramatically increase our tree count with a bold new goal of 500 000 trees by 2025. This Arbor month (September 2019), we aim to set our new goal in motion by raising: 10 000 trees”.
Since its inception in 2010, Greenpop has planted in excess of 100 000 trees in South Africa and surrounding areas. They have managed to raise enough funds for 3 942 trees so far this Arbor Month, and they need funds for 6 058 more trees to meet their goal. Each tree costs R120.00, and all people are invited to donate toward the cause. A tree may be purchased in a loved one’s name, after which, the GPS location of the tree will be sent to the donor.
