South Africans can recycle and make money at the same time, all thanks to a revolutionary company called Imagined Earth. The company has introduced reverse vending machines (RVM) in South Africa. In return for submitting recyclable material, the app pays you for recycling.
According to Imagined Earth, “A Reverse Vending Machine is a unique and interactive platform that provides both businesses and consumers an opportunity to contribute actively to the solution of environmental degradation in a convenient and rewarding way”.
The Imagined Earth system works off product bar codes. The machine is able to process plastic, steel and aluminium, and rewards users for their contribution through the way of points. You simply scan the barcode with the Imagined Earth app, and it tells you if the piece of packaging waste is able to be recycled through the RVMs or not.
Reports have shown that the world generates at least 3.5 million tons of plastic and other solid waste a day. The new App will not only help South African’s move towards a zero- waste environment but is also willing to pay you.

You can then take all your recyclable material to your nearest RVM and turn your waste into shares on EasyEquities. The machines are currently being rolled out around the country and will soon be available in stores.
