Dr. Cornel Hart Joins Global Academy of Community Engagement Scholars

Dr. Cornel Hart, a respected academic member at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), and member of the BCD programme team, has been honoured with a distinguished membership in the Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship (ACES) https://academyofces.org/about. Selected among only 32 scholars worldwide, Dr. Hart’s induction into ACES is a testament to her significant contributions to community engagement and development, both in South Africa and internationally. She was officially welcomed into the academy in July 2024, with this recognition marking a significant milestone in her career.

As a driving force behind UWC’s focus on engaged scholarship, Dr. Hart has played a pivotal role in shaping the University’s approach to community engagement as well as community development, research, and policy. Her leadership in national policy formation and her advocacy for community partnerships have had a lasting impact on both academic and community sectors.

Over the years, Dr. Hart has been instrumental in assisting universities to develop their community development programmes, coordinating the new UWC Community Development degree, and conducting participatory research that aligns with the needs of communities across South Africa and beyond. Her collaborative efforts with international partners, particularly her work with the University of Missouri, have further solidified her reputation as a leader in the field of community development and engagement.

In her role as a scholar and practitioner, Dr. Hart has consistently emphasised the importance of ethical practice, social equity, and the integration of indigenous knowledge in community development and engagement. Her work has not only advanced academic discourse but has also led to tangible improvements in the well-being of communities, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and Africa’s Vision 2063.
