Coronation employees packed food this Mandela Day, supporting FoodForward SA’s efforts to strengthen food security and help vulnerable South Africans facing rising living costs.
Coronation employees marked Mandela Day by volunteering at FoodForward SA’s annual food packing event, helping expand the organisation’s efforts to combat hunger and improve food security across South Africa.
FoodForward SA redistributes surplus food through a national network of more than 2,500 beneficiary organisations, reaching nearly one million vulnerable South Africans every day.
The impact of the annual volunteer initiative continues to grow. During last year’s Mandela Day campaign, volunteers packed 200 tonnes of food, helping provide more than 880,000 meals to communities across the country.
“There are many worthy causes to support on Mandela Day. We chose FoodForward SA because of the scale of its reach and the work it does to improve food security across South Africa. We’ve supported the organisation since 2021, and this year’s volunteer initiative is another opportunity for our people to contribute to that work,” says Wisahl Ganief, Group Head of Marketing at Coronation.
FoodForward SA’s latest State of Household Food Insecurity Report highlights the growing need for initiatives that address hunger, finding that food insecurity has increased significantly over the past five years due to rising living costs, unemployment and inequality.
Coronation says its support for FoodForward SA complements its broader community investment programme, which also focuses on early childhood development, literacy, teacher development, consumer financial education and community food gardens.
