Acting Mayor Visits Flood-Hit Informal Settlements

The City of Cape Town’s Acting Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews, visited the Vygieskraal informal settlement in Athlone and Kampies informal settlement yesterday, 7 July 2025, to assess conditions following the recent heavy rainfall and flooding across parts of the metro.

Alderman Eddie Andrews’s visits formed part of ongoing oversight efforts following the heavy rainfall seen in the City over the past two weeks. The heavy rain saw teams from Disaster Risk Management, Informal Settlements Management, Roads Infrastructure Management, Urban Waste Management, Energy and Community Services teams responding to multiple incidents across the metro.

‘Our City teams were on the ground long before the rain began, clearing canals, unblocking stormwater drains, and engaging with at-risk communities through the Winter Readiness Programme. These preparations have made a measurable difference. However, the intensity of this past weekend’s weather resulted in flooding across the city. Our priority now is supporting the most affected,’ said Alderman Andrews.

According to the SA Weather Service, Cape Town has recorded over 100mm of rainfall in certain areas between Friday and Sunday evening that caused localised flooding in several low-lying informal settlements.

In response to these floods, the City’s Informal Settlements Management has been on the ground to provide assistance to residents affected by these floods. In addition to this response, humanitarian partners, including Gift of the Givers, have been working with the City to provide aid to those in need.

‘To every resident who has been affected by the heavy rains over the past week, I want you to know that our teams are working tirelessly to ensure that we bring aid, restore services and clear any blockages,’ said Alderman Andrews.

Several City teams were on the ground over the weekend to assist the impacted communities.
