Atterbury and City Partner to Revive Uitsig

The Atterbury Trust has partnered with the City of Cape Town to launch a community-driven renewal initiative in Uitsig, one of the neighbourhoods prioritised under the City’s Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme (MURP). The partnership aims to revitalise the area through targeted interventions that strengthen resilience, restore dignity and create opportunities for local residents.

Through this initiative, Uitsig will see several neighbourhood improvements, including greening and beautification projects, mural installations, small-scale job opportunities and support for local skills and micro-businesses.

The initiative began when the Atterbury Trust approached the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews, seeking guidance on meaningful ways to invest in Uitsig. With input from the City’s MURP team, who have deep insights into community needs and histories, key areas of opportunity were identified.

Atterbury has now committed to funding a bottom-up, community-informed development model that places Uitsig residents at the centre of decision-making. The Trust will continue working closely with the City to ensure successful project implementation and alignment with regeneration goals.

Recently, Uitsig residents took part in the “Hello Uitsig” sentiment and participation survey, designed to understand local priorities and opportunities. The data gathered will guide the next phases of neighbourhood improvement. The approach begins with community onboarding and data capturing, followed by a phased roll-out shaped directly by the insights received from residents.

Alderman Andrews welcomed the partnership, saying that the City encourages more private-sector role players to partner with them because upliftment happens faster and more meaningfully when they work together. As a MURP node, Uitsig is a priority for sustained investment. With Atterbury’s commitment and the community’s voice guiding the work, the City believes they can deliver improvements that build pride, restore confidence and strengthen local identity.

The City will continue providing technical guidance, regulatory support and coordination throughout the roll-out, ensuring alignment with broader MURP objectives.

This collaboration marks a significant step toward a more inclusive, community-led future for Uitsig and illustrates the impact that is possible when government, civil society and residents work together to transform neighbourhoods.
