The Limpopo Provincial Government, Telkom and BCX have launched a digital connectivity pilot linking a hospital, clinic and school to stronger public services across the province.
The R3 million initiative covers George Masebe Hospital, Mosesetjane Clinic and Machepelele Secondary School, creating a digital foundation aimed at strengthening healthcare, education and government service delivery.
The project uses fibre-based SD-WAN technology to provide more resilient connectivity across the three facilities. The investment includes installation, activation, service monitoring, assurance and technical support for 12 months.
For communities, the value of the project extends beyond simply providing internet connectivity.
At George Masebe Hospital and Mosesetjane Clinic, stronger digital infrastructure can support services such as telemedicine and tele-radiology, creating opportunities for healthcare professionals to connect with specialist expertise without patients always having to travel significant distances.
Improved connectivity can also support access to and synchronisation of electronic patient information, helping healthcare facilities use digital systems more effectively as technology becomes increasingly integrated into public health services.
At Machepelele Secondary School, connectivity can expand access to digital learning platforms, online educational resources and technology-enabled teaching and learning tools.
For learners and teachers, particularly in communities where access to digital infrastructure can be limited, stronger connectivity creates opportunities to participate more fully in an education system increasingly supported by technology.
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba said digital transformation must ultimately result in improved services and outcomes for communities.
“Digital transformation must ultimately translate into better services and better outcomes for the people of Limpopo. By strengthening connectivity in hospitals, clinics and schools, we are creating opportunities to improve access to healthcare, education and public services,” Ramathuba said.
The pilot also builds on Telkom’s wider infrastructure investment in Limpopo.
According to Telkom, the group has invested approximately R1.24 billion in network infrastructure across the province over the past five years, including 218 new network sites and 1,400 network upgrades.
Telkom Group CEO Serame Taukobong said digital infrastructure should ultimately be measured by what communities are able to achieve through improved connectivity.
“Digital infrastructure is about more than connectivity; it is about what that connectivity makes possible,” Taukobong said.
BCX brings additional capabilities across cloud technology, cybersecurity, data, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and big data, allowing the partnership to explore opportunities beyond basic connectivity.
These technologies could eventually support more integrated digital government services and help public institutions use data and digital systems to improve how services are planned and delivered.
The Limpopo Provincial Government, Telkom and BCX are also expected to formalise further collaboration through Memoranda of Understanding.
Future areas identified for cooperation include smart cities, smart agriculture, infrastructure security, water management, environmental monitoring and digital learning.
These applications could create wider opportunities for communities by improving access to information, strengthening management of public resources and supporting more efficient delivery of essential services.
The current pilot provides an opportunity to test how that approach works at community level through three facilities serving healthcare and education needs.
If successfully expanded, similar digital infrastructure could provide a platform for more hospitals, clinics, schools and public institutions across Limpopo to adopt technology-enabled services.
For residents, the longer-term value of the investment will ultimately depend on whether stronger connectivity translates into easier access to healthcare, improved learning opportunities and more responsive public services.
By connecting a hospital, clinic and school, the partnership is demonstrating how relatively targeted digital infrastructure investment can provide a foundation for broader social and economic impact across communities.
