R10,5m upgrade to Tafelsig Clinic

Construction on the Tafelsig Clinic upgrade will begin soon as part of a broader R15 million investment in City Health facilities aimed at improving access, safety and service delivery for communities.

The project includes a first-floor extension, installation of a lift, new internal and external staircases and upgrades to the ground floor to meet growing demand for healthcare services.

“This upgrade will help us meet the growing demand for services and provide safer, more accessible care for residents,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham, who thanked communities for their patience and support during construction.

Tafelsig Clinic, which opened in 1994, later became the site of the City’s first substance abuse outpatient treatment programme using the Matrix® model.

During construction, services will be temporarily provided at nearby facilities, including the Thusong Centre, which will offer child health, curative care, immunisation, nutrition and Matrix services. The Tafelsig Community Day Centre will continue delivering adult curative care, mental health, antenatal care, reproductive health, TB and HIV services.

All pharmacy services will remain available at the Tafelsig CDC, while Chronic Dispensing Unit medicine parcels will be issued at the Thusong Centre.

The upgrade forms part of the City’s wider programme to strengthen health infrastructure. Additional roof replacement projects are also under way at several Khayelitsha clinics to improve safety and efficiency for both staff and patients.
