International Nurses Day 2026 highlights the critical role nurses play globally as healthcare systems face growing pressure, workforce shortages and rising public health challenges.
Healthcare workers across the world are being recognised today as International Nurses Day 2026 shines a spotlight on the critical role nurses continue to play in sustaining healthcare systems and protecting communities.
This year’s theme, announced by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), is: “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”
The campaign highlights the urgent need to strengthen support for nurses through safer working environments, leadership opportunities, fair treatment and greater investment in healthcare systems globally.
According to the ICN, nurses remain central to delivering quality healthcare at a time when countries continue facing growing pressure from workforce shortages, increasing healthcare demands, climate-related health risks and ongoing global instability.
The organisation says nurses often carry enormous responsibility within healthcare systems while working under difficult conditions, long hours and increasing emotional and physical strain.
José Luis Cobos Serrano said this year’s theme reflects the importance of ensuring nurses are fully empowered to deliver the greatest possible impact within healthcare systems.
He noted that empowering nurses means more than recognising their contribution. It also involves removing barriers that prevent them from fully using their knowledge, expertise and leadership capabilities.
International Nurses Day is observed annually on 12 May to mark the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, widely recognised as the founder of modern nursing.
The global observance serves both as a celebration of the profession and as a reminder of the growing challenges facing healthcare systems worldwide.
The ICN says this year’s campaign will also focus on practical solutions needed to recruit and retain nurses, including fair compensation, safe working conditions, stronger education opportunities and better support structures for healthcare professionals.
As healthcare systems continue evolving globally, the 2026 campaign reinforces a growing international message: investing in nurses is essential to strengthening healthcare access, improving patient outcomes and building healthier communities for the future.
