outh Africa is using Tourism Month to expand digital opportunities for tourism SMMEs, helping smaller operators reach travellers, grow businesses and participate in the tourism economy.
Tourism Month 2026 is being observed under the theme “Growing South Africa’s Tourism Sector in the Digital Era,” with government placing greater emphasis on how digital technology can support growth across the tourism sector.
The focus creates opportunities particularly for smaller, community-based and emerging tourism operators that can struggle to achieve the same visibility and market access as established tourism businesses.
Digital platforms, social media and artificial intelligence are increasingly changing how travellers discover destinations, plan trips and find tourism experiences.
Speaking at the launch of Tourism Month 2026, Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said many journeys now begin online, with travellers discovering destinations through social media, content creators and digital searches.
She said technology platforms have an important role to play in helping tourism businesses become more visible and discoverable, particularly smaller businesses seeking to reach customers beyond their immediate geographical areas.
De Lille said digital transformation in tourism should benefit SMMEs and reduce barriers to participation rather than create new ones.
The potential could allow a small tourism operator in Limpopo to be discovered by travellers elsewhere in South Africa or internationally, while a township restaurant could use digital platforms to showcase its offering to a much wider audience.
Artificial intelligence is also becoming part of the tourism ecosystem, influencing how travellers search for destinations, develop itineraries, compare experiences, translate information and make travel decisions.
For smaller tourism businesses, these technologies can provide another route into the market.
A locally produced video showcasing a community experience, restaurant, accommodation establishment or attraction can introduce that business to travellers who might otherwise never have known it existed.
South African Tourism has also placed digital storytelling on the agenda.
At Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026, the Business Opportunity Networking Day programme included TikTok masterclasses focused on digital storytelling and turning digital inspiration into tourism bookings.
The programme explored the growing influence of content creators and the role online content can play in shaping where people choose to travel.
The digital opportunity comes as domestic travel continues to provide an important market for tourism businesses.
According to figures presented by De Lille at the Tourism Month 2026 media launch, South Africans recorded 21.2 million overnight trips during the first half of 2026, up from 20.4 million during the corresponding period in 2025.
South Africans also recorded 5.2 million holiday trips, representing a 36% increase compared with the same period in 2025.
Connecting more of those travellers with smaller tourism enterprises could help spread tourism spending across a broader range of destinations and communities.
That spending has the potential to support accommodation providers, restaurants, tour guides, transport operators, craftspeople and other small enterprises that form part of local tourism economies.
For Tourism Month 2026, digital inclusion is therefore about more than technology.
It is about giving more South African tourism entrepreneurs the opportunity to be discovered while giving travellers greater access to communities, destinations and experiences they may previously have overlooked.
As South Africa’s tourism sector becomes increasingly digital, the opportunity is to ensure that being small or geographically remote does not have to mean being invisible.
