In anticipation of the busy Easter travel period, the Automobile Association (AA), in partnership with the Free State Community Safety, Roads and Transport Department (FSCSR&T), the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and MasterDrive, is launching a road safety awareness and education campaign.
This multi-stakeholder initiative aims to educate motorists on safe driving practices and responsible road use, with the goal of reducing accidents and fatalities on South Africa’s roads during one of the most high-risk travel seasons.
Campaign Launch and On-the-Ground Activations
The official campaign launch will take place on 11 April, on the N1 in Kroonstad, Free State, where leading road safety authorities and partners will combine to enforce the importance of vehicle roadworthiness, driver awareness and overall road user responsibility,
As part of its commitment to road safety, the AA together with invited stakeholders will maintain a strong, visible presence across the Free State throughout the Easter period. On 17 April, the AA will be stationed at the Shell Ultra City in Kroonstad – a vital rest stop for travellers heading to various destinations.
Travellers stopping at the activation site, can look forward to:
– Passenger safety simulator
– Tyre and vehicle safety checks
– Engagements with road safety experts from various organisations
A Call for Safer Roads
“The Easter period is historically one of the most dangerous times on South African roads, characterised by high traffic volumes and an increased risk of accidents. Our mission is to empower every road user with the knowledge and tools they need to travel safely. Through this campaign, we want to drive home the message that responsible driving saves lives. We encourage all motorists to plan their trips, rest when needed, and prioritise road safety,” says AA CEO Bobby Ramagwede.
The AA and its partners are calling on all motorists, passengers, and road users to remain alert and intentional in their travels. Drivers are encouraged to make time for regular breaks, obey speed limits, avoid distractions, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on long trips.
“MasterDrive is proud to join the AA in the vital road safety initiative”, says Eugene Herbert, CEO or MasterDrive. “Drink driving is a key focus for us, and we’re introducing several activations to underscore the dangers of driving under the influence. These activities allow drivers to experience, from a sober perspective, just how impaired decision-making becomes after alcohol consumption. It’s a powerful way to shift mindsets.”
“As part of their participation, MasterDrive will offer attendees a unique opportunity to wear “Drunk Buster Goggles” while navigating a course on a motorised scooter, simulating the effects of alcohol on vision and reaction time. “Have a shocking epiphany about the realities of drink driving is an essential lesson every driver should experience,” adds Eugene.
The RTMC urges motorists to be especially cautious when driving in areas with high pedestrian traffic. “An alarming number of pedestrians die needlessly on our roads. Some of the these are attributable to alcohol abuse and reckless conduct. We must take responsibility for preventing thee deaths,” says the RTMC CEO Advocate Makhosini Msibi.
Free State MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, Jabu Mbalula, echoes this sentiment: “During adverse weather conditions, I urge all drivers to practice patience, caution, and consideration. It is important to take regular breaks every 200 kilometres or every two hours to fight fatigue. Always obey speed limits to avoid accidents, stay focused, and eliminate distractions, such as using a mobile phone while driving. Additionally, ensure that your vehicle is in good condition before embarking on your journey.”
During this Easter period, we encourage travellers to share their safe arrival experiences using the hashtag #GotHomeSafe or #ItStartsWithMe. By doing so, you not only inform your loved ones but also inspire others.
