SABC1 celebrates Brenda Fassie’s legacy

SABC1 will this weekend premiere Vulindlela, a powerful four-part documentary series that brings Brenda Fassie’s remarkable life story back into the national conversation. The series, which airs every Saturday at 20:00 from 15 November to 6 December 2025, re-introduces South Africa’s “Queen of Pop” through rare interviews, gripping re-enactments, and electrifying musical performances.

Vulindlela takes viewers behind the headlines and stage lights to reveal the woman who defied the odds, inspired millions, and used her voice to challenge a nation. Born in Langa, Cape Town, Brenda Fassie’s talent was evident from the age of four. By sixteen she had already captured South Africa’s attention, fusing township pop, political commentary and sheer charisma into a sound that transcended generations.

When the industry wrote her off, Brenda did what she always did best – she reinvented herself. The album Vulindlela, released in the late 1990s, became a cultural milestone, a song of joy and liberation that continues to ignite dancefloors and hearts today.

“The story and legacy of Brenda Fassie can never be forgotten,” says Ofentse Thinane, Channel Head of SABC1. “She is a prime example of chasing your dreams and challenging the status quo. Brenda Fassie showed South Africans how to turn adversity into power and pain into art.”

Anchored by acclaimed actress Brenda Ngxoli as Brenda Fassie and Sphamandla Dhludlu as producer Chicco Twala, the docudrama combines archival material with newly filmed dramatizations. Family members, friends, collaborators, and music historians lend first-hand accounts, offering intimate glimpses into the artist’s creative process, public controversies, and deeply human struggles.

Each episode explores a different chapter of her journey:

Episode 1 (15 Nov) – The Rise of Brenda Fassie: From Tiny Tots performances in Langa to the breakout hit Weekend Special, audiences witness the birth of a legend.
Episode 2 (22 Nov) – Brenda and Chicco: The Magical Duo: The partnership that redefined South African pop and birthed timeless anthems such as Too Late for Mama and Vulindlela.
Episode 3 (29 Nov) – The Price of Excess: A candid look at the cost of fame, generosity, and addiction, as friends recount the turbulence behind the glamour.
Episode 4 (6 Dec) – National Loss and Legacy: South Africa’s collective mourning and the indelible imprint Brenda left on music and memory.

Two decades after her passing, Brenda Fassie’s influence endures – from the rhythms of Afro-pop and kwaito to the bold self-expression of today’s artists. Her voice carried the pain and triumph of a country in transition, and Vulindlela reminds viewers why she remains one of South Africa’s most beloved and complex icons.

“Brenda’s music wasn’t just entertainment,” says producer Chicco Twala in one of the series interviews. “It was truth – raw, messy, beautiful truth.”

The four-part documentary airs every Saturday at 20:00 on SABC1 and will also stream live on SABC Plus. Join the nationwide celebration of Brenda Fassie’s life by sharing your favourite memories and songs on social media using #VulindlelaSABC1.
