Learners from across six Springbok community high schools had fun building working turbine models as part of a Global Wind Day Competition. Celebrated across the world on 15 June each year, Global Wind Day is a day to learn more about wind energy, its power, and the possibilities it holds to change the world.
Six grades 8 to 9 learners were selected to form part of a team that represented their school in the competition, and were given three weeks to complete their project. SA Wyk High and High School Namaqualand were the chosen winners of the competition and have been invited to the Kangnas Wind Farm, later this year.
All participants received winter essentials, including a beanie, a scarf, and gloves, as well as backpacks and water bottles. Additionally, the winning schools received 2.8 kW generators, to assist with loadshedding as well as smart watches.
The participating schools included Concordia high school; Okiep high school; SA van Wyk high; High School Namaqualand; St Anna high School; and Nababeep High School.
