Opera Concerts Bring Culture Closer

Cape Town residents will soon experience live opera in their own neighbourhoods as free community concerts expand access to world-class cultural performances citywide.

The City of Cape Town’s Arts and Culture Branch has partnered with the Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble to present a series of open-access concerts across multiple communities next week. The initiative, titled Opera in Your Neighbourhood, aims to move opera beyond traditional theatre venues and into familiar civic spaces.

The programme is designed to broaden participation in the arts, making high-quality performances accessible to residents of all ages. Previous editions of the community concerts have drawn strong audience engagement, prompting the City to expand the initiative.

The 18-member Vocal Ensemble, led by a chorus master, will perform three free concerts in Langa, Bothasig and Fish Hoek. The performances will feature a varied musical programme including opera, classical pieces, musical theatre, African traditional music and gospel.

‘Opera is a uniquely powerful art form that combines music, drama, visual art and dance. It is often viewed as inaccessible, but through Opera in Your Neighbourhood we bring the opera to communities. The City is proud to support this initiative as it gives residents an opportunity to attend a concert and be immersed in this rich cultural art form,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.

Concert dates and venues include:

  • Langa Civic Centre: 26 February at 12:00

  • Bothasig Community Hall: 27 February at 18:00

  • Fish Hoek Community Hall: 28 February at 12:00

The Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble says community engagement remains central to the programme’s mission.

‘The Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble presents free community concerts in Langa, Bothasig and Fish Hoek in City of Cape Town venues. These concerts serve to make opera and classical singing accessible to people who would not usually have easy access to the theatre. Audiences have always responded with much enthusiasm and heartfelt comments as they are given the opportunity to see opera singers up close and personal and in their own neighbourhood. The Vocal Ensemble looks forward to engaging with new and diverse audiences with their energetic and beautiful musical programme,’ said chorus master Antoinette Huyssen.

Residents interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP via the City’s Arts and Culture contact channel.
