Communities commemorate Mandela Day amidst pandemic

A team from Kangnas Wind Farm, near Springbok, visited Harmony Home in Bergsig to deliver much needed PPE items, amidst the CV-19 third wave, in commemoration of Mandela Day.The support also included the provision of five hot water geysers and computer equipment.

“PPE gear is crucial amidst this ongoing health pandemic. Our elderly residents and care facility staff
can’t afford to be exposed, so we therefore need adequate protection to continue our daily work,” said Liz Rooi from Harmony Home.

Harmony Home is celebrating their 30th year of establishment this year and currently houses 41 residents, who are cared for by nearly 30 staff members. It is one of the beneficiaries of the national NPO, Masked Heroes, which focuses on protecting Community Care Workers which includes community health workers, emergency services personnel, social workers and social auxiliary workers, across South Africa’s network of hundreds of non-government organisations.

“This year Mandela Day is being honoured amidst the CV-19’s third wave, which is why we put our support behind the ‘Masked Heroes’ in the hope of reducing community transmission, especially amongst our elderly who, together with care facility staff members, are some of the most vulnerable members of our communities and therefore need protection,” explained Cheryl Persensie, Economic Development Manager for Kangnas Wind Farm.

The donated PPE is viewed as critical in the protection of the elderly residents of Harmony Home and included 4 000 medical masks, thermometers, large quantities of hand sanitiser and coveralls. This is in addition to the hot water geysers and a laptop, which will be used for vital closed-circuit security camera programmes, daily attendance monitoring, and logging of temperatures.
