Ten more families in Gugulethu received the keys to brand-new homes this week, marking a significant step forward in one of Cape Town’s largest housing developments. The handover forms part of the ongoing Gugulethu Infill housing project, which will ultimately provide 1,004 housing units for qualifying beneficiaries.
The homes were officially handed over by Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim, and senior City officials. Since the City of Cape Town assumed full control of the project, development has gained momentum, with construction teams working around the clock to meet delivery targets.
“This is more than just a housing project—it’s about restoring dignity and building futures,” said Pophaim during the handover ceremony. “We’re making steady progress and are proud to be delivering on our promise to the community.”
Of the total units planned, 570 will be built in Gugulethu and 434 in Mau Mau, Nyanga. Pophaim noted that despite previous challenges, work on-site is moving ahead steadily, and further handovers are expected in the coming months.
All housing opportunities are allocated according to the City’s Housing Needs Register and Allocation Policy, which ensures transparency and prevents queue jumping. Only applicants who meet the criteria outlined in South African legislation are considered for housing.
As progress continues, the Gugulethu Infill project stands as a testament to the City’s renewed focus on housing delivery and community upliftment.
