AIMS Honours Himla Soodyall for Leadership in Science

Africa’s scientific community is celebrating one of its most influential voices. Professor Himla Soodyall, Executive Officer of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), has been awarded the AIMS Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to science and her tireless efforts to empower the next generation of African researchers.

The award, presented by the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), highlights individuals whose impact extends far beyond the laboratory. Professor Soodyall’s pioneering research in human population genetics has not only reshaped our understanding of human origins and migration, but also showcased Africa’s central role in the global story of science.

Equally important has been her leadership in building scientific capacity across the continent. Through her work at ASSAf and her active involvement in global networks, she has championed collaboration, mentorship, and inclusivity — ensuring that young African researchers, particularly women, have opportunities to thrive in fields where they have been historically underrepresented.

Reflecting on the recognition, Professor Soodyall said: “This award is not only a recognition of my personal journey but also of the many colleagues, students, and institutions that have walked alongside me. Science thrives through collaboration, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I have had to contribute to advancing knowledge and building scientific capacity in Africa.”

Her story is a reminder of the power of science to transform societies. By inspiring and mentoring countless young scientists, she is helping to build a future where African research and innovation take centre stage in solving global challenges.

The AIMS Lifetime Achievement Award affirms Professor Soodyall’s legacy as more than a scientist — she is a champion for opportunity, equity, and progress, whose work continues to light the way for generations to come.
