Youth Entrepreneurship Programme Selects 145 Participants

The #YouthStartCT challenge selected 145 young entrepreneurs from over 700 entries, providing training, mentorship and networking opportunities to support business growth and future job creation.

The #YouthStartCT entrepreneurial challenge has selected 145 young participants from more than 700 entries, highlighting strong interest in youth entrepreneurship across Cape Town.

Applications were screened through a multi-stage evaluation process that assessed eligibility, feasibility of business ideas and potential economic impact aligned with the programme’s development objectives.

The selected group includes 68 females and 77 males, many of whom already operate small businesses or have early-stage business ideas. Nearly 40% of participants fall within the 18–25 age group, reflecting strong engagement from young entrepreneurs entering the market.

Participants represent communities across the metro, with the highest number coming from Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and Observatory, demonstrating broad geographic participation in the programme.

The initiative provides structured entrepreneurship training designed to strengthen practical business skills and improve participants’ readiness to scale their ideas into sustainable enterprises.

Participants receive:

  • Structured entrepreneurship training
  • Pitch development and presentation opportunities
  • Access to mentorship and industry support
  • Exposure to business networks and partnerships

Participants will progress through multiple pitching rounds, with finalists selected in two categories: business ideas and existing businesses.

The programme forms part of the City’s broader youth development strategy, supporting pathways into entrepreneurship, income generation and economic participation.

According to Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health Francine Higham, expanding access to training strengthens the long-term impact of the initiative.

“This programme grows participation while investing in real skills that can lead to income and job creation. It supports broader efforts to create sustainable opportunities for young people through entrepreneurship,” she said.

Prizes and support include:

  • Seed funding
  • Company registration support
  • Compliance assistance
  • Access to networking opportunities
  • Data support for participation in virtual engagement platforms

The programme aims to equip young entrepreneurs with the tools, confidence and connections needed to build sustainable businesses and contribute to economic growth.
