Shavathon Invites Nation To Be Courageous

South Africans are invited to show solidarity with cancer patients this weekend as CANSA hosts Shavathon events nationwide, encouraging participation through shaving, spraying or donating hair.

Shavathon remains one of the country’s most recognisable cancer awareness initiatives, creating visible moments of support for patients undergoing treatment and for the caregivers who stand beside them.

This Saturday, 28 February 2026, selected malls across South Africa will host Shavathon events, offering participants the opportunity to shave their heads, spray their hair in bold colours or donate ponytails. Donated hair is used to create affordable natural hair wigs for cancer patients, available through CANSA Care Centres.

Limited edition “Be Courageous” headwear will also be available at participating malls for R60 per item, while stocks last.

While mall-based events take place this weekend, CANSA has expanded its focus to community-driven Shavathons throughout the year. Residents whose local malls are not hosting an event can still participate by organising community gatherings or workplace initiatives.

Workplaces are encouraged to host Shavathon events to support colleagues affected by cancer, reinforcing a culture of compassion and solidarity within professional environments.

For those unable to attend in person, CANSA offers a “bail out” option, allowing supporters to contribute financially in lieu of shaving or spraying.

Funds raised through Shavathon support CANSA’s free services for cancer patients and their families. These include telephonic and virtual counselling in multiple South African languages, support groups, clinical nurse guidance on treatment side effects and pain management, advocacy support for patients facing delays or medication shortages, and accommodation assistance at CANSA Care Homes and TLC Lodges for children and teens undergoing treatment.

By participating, supporters not only raise awareness but contribute directly to sustaining these services, which help ensure that patients and caregivers receive practical and emotional support throughout the cancer journey.

Shavathon organisers are encouraging South Africans to take a moment amid their daily routines to stand visibly with those facing cancer — and to be courageous together.
