19-year-old develops eco-friendly edible straws that don’t turn soft

South African Leila Siljeur won R50 000 from Allan Gray Orbis Foundation National Jamboree for her unique edible and environmentally friendly straws registered as Eat Me Straws. These straws are more durable than their paper counterparts as they do not become soft after sitting in a beverage for a while.

Eat Me Straws has three varieties, namely regular, health, and vegan. The texture of the straws resemble that of liquorice and dried fruit. She said, “The feedback from the students who have bought the straws was positive. They love the straws”.

Siljeur’s ultimate goal is to sell Eat Me Straws to big businesses, to make distribution greater, and so that the straws aren’t directly paid for by consumers.
