New Khayelitsha Transport Hub Expands Opportunity

Investment in transport infrastructure is connecting underserved communities, improving safety and unlocking economic access through integrated public mobility in Khayelitsha’s growing urban corridor today.

The construction of the Vuyani Public Transport Interchange marks a significant step in addressing one of South Africa’s most persistent social and economic barriers: access to safe, reliable and affordable transport. Located in Khayelitsha, one of the country’s largest townships, the new interchange is designed to integrate multiple transport modes and improve daily mobility for thousands of commuters.

Led by the City of Cape Town, the Vuyani PTI forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen transport equity by connecting historically underserved communities to economic hubs, education centres and employment opportunities.

Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, said the facility represents a long-term investment in dignity, safety and efficiency for commuters.

“The construction of the Vuyani Public Transport Interchange is an important investment in improved infrastructure and safer, more accessible public transport for our community,” he said. “Once complete, commuters will be able to access minibus taxis, the MyCiTi Bus Service and Golden Arrow buses from one convenient location.”

The interchange, located at the corner of Spine Road and Jeff Masemola Road near the Vuyani meat market, will include covered waiting areas, dedicated loading lanes, improved lighting, ablution facilities and an administration building. These features are designed to address longstanding safety concerns while improving commuter comfort and accessibility.

A new MyCiTi bus stop planned just 200 metres away at Spine Road and Govan Mbeki Road will place multiple transport options within walking distance, reducing travel barriers and improving access to economic and social opportunities.

The project forms part of the next phase of the MyCiTi Bus Service expansion into the metro south-east, strengthening connectivity between Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and key economic nodes such as Claremont and Wynberg.

Reliable transport is widely recognised as a cornerstone of inclusive economic growth. Without it, residents face limited access to jobs, increased financial strain and reduced participation in the broader economy.
