Mama Zakhe Champions GBV Awareness Campaign

Clover Mama Afrika beneficiary Mama Zakhe Rammekwa from Princess has led a community-based gender-based violence awareness campaign, mobilising residents during the annual 16 Days of Activism initiative.

The campaign saw women and children march through the Princess area to raise awareness about gender-based violence and to promote conversations around safety, dignity and respect within the community. The visible public action aimed to encourage dialogue and reinforce shared responsibility in addressing violence against women and children.

As part of the initiative, age-appropriate awareness sessions were held for children, focusing on helping them understand what constitutes abuse, how to recognise unsafe situations and where to seek help if they are at risk. The sessions were facilitated with a focus on empowerment and support.

Mama Zakhe, who is a trained social worker, also led discussions with vulnerable community members, providing education, guidance and access to support resources. Her professional background enabled her to engage effectively on sensitive issues while creating a safe and respectful environment for participation.

Community leaders said the campaign highlighted the importance of grassroots action in preventing gender-based violence and strengthening social awareness. Mama Zakhe’s involvement during the 16 Days of Activism underscored the role of local leadership in driving behavioural change and building safer communities.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts by community organisations and partners to address gender-based violence through education, awareness and collective action at a local level.
