Zambia celebrates Independence

Remembering how the country attained Independence from the British colonisation, Zambia celebrated and marked its 56th Independence Day anniversary  on Saturday.

Due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the main event in Lusaka, was canceled and many celebrated in the confinements of their homes.

Before the event began, President Lungu ushered in senior government officials and diplomats, whose attendance was restricted, by laying of wreaths at the Freedom Statue.

Unlike in the previous years where hundreds of people would attend the event, this year the arrangement was different with only 100 people attending the celebration following COVID-19 regulations.

The Independence event was furthered to the State House where various people were recognised for their distinguished service to the country at an investiture ceremony.

The country celebrated  Independence Day under the theme, “One Land, One Nation, Building Our Future, Proud and Free.” The event was  broadcasted live on state broadcaster, the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation.

“Zambia shall forever be one country, one nation, belonging to all of us as its citizens. It does not matter where one comes from, what language one speaks, what faith or political persuasion one holds. We all have a stake in our country,” the President spoke.

“They came together, regardless of their differences, because they wanted this country to be free. Free from colonial rule and free from exploitation,” the President concluded.
