With all that is happening, Zimbabwe has decided to reopen schools on the 14th of September for Zimbabwe School Examination Council (ZIMSEC) students who will sit for exams in December.
Zimbabwean primary and secondary schools have been closed for nearly six months following the pandemic lockdown regulations by the President. Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa also stated that Cambridge examination classes will also open on the 14th of September.
Due to the pandemic, ZIMSEC examinations that are usually conducted in November will now begin on the 1st of December 2020. The ZIMSEC board considered moving forward with the examinations that have already been set.
The exams board has assured to continue taking precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the viral disease. With such assurance, the government has expressed satisfaction that the June public examinations were completed without any COVID-19 cases being reported among staff and students. Stakeholders and the government are working closely to ensure the safety of pupils.
Commenting on the news, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said:
“Unfortunately, the announcement of the dates for reopening of schools for examination classes comes at a time when some teacher unions have vowed not to go back to work unless the government reviews their salaries by pegging them at 550 U.S. dollars which they earned in October 2018.”
Despite the teachers response to the reopening of schools, the government has ensured that these end of year exams will surely take place.
