Starting Grade 1 with a helping hand

Over 1 000 first time learners, across 10 Primary Schools in the Sol Plaatje area, eagerly began their first term in Grade 1, with a little gift awaiting them. Each young-learner received a “surprise” School Pack, containing a school bag and lunch box set.

“The learners were so excited to receive their packs. Something like a school bag may seem small
but for these children starting Grade 1, having something to carry their school books and lunch in can go a long way in helping them adjust,” said Mr Mapete, Principal of Zingiza Primary School.

The packs were supplied by Matla A Bokone Solar (Formerly known as Droogfontein 2 Solar), to give an extra boost to these new learners, as they begin their schooling career, a special time in the lives of these children. The intention was to boost self-esteem and a sense of importance that marked this momentous milestone.

“Our Back-2-School Initiative promotes the dignity of Grade 1 learners who are officially starting their schooling career at “Big School”. A school bag and a lunch box set are such small, but significant elements in a child’s schooling career. They are what a child needs to carry their learning material and their food,” said Nomzamo Landingwe, Chief Community Operations Officer for Malta A Bokone, which funds this initiative as part its solar project’s Socio-Economic Development Programme.
