Started a year ago, the City has since hosted several sessions with this latest iteration taking place at the Gugu S’Thebe Cultural Centre in Langa.
‘These gatherings have become important points on the calendar for Cape Town-based operators because it has helped them find synergies within their products and services, and is a chance for them to hear insights on industry trends and developments,’ said Alderman James Vos, the Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth.
The forum looked particularly at the role of women in the industry. A South African Tourism survey last year found that women make up 51% of the industry’s workforce and 45% of its ownership.
Michelle Page, Chairperson of Women in Tourism Western Cape, spoke at the forum.
‘We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share our commitment to supporting women in tourism. We strongly believe in the power of collaboration and partnership to create meaningful connections. It is essential to seize every opportunity to learn from one another, support each other’s aspirations, and celebrate the remarkable women we are,’ said Page.
Alderman Vos said that he wanted to see more women in leadership positions in tourism.
‘More women leaders means a better, more rounded understanding of clients and customers and their needs. Further, studies actually show that more women in positions of business leadership means more innovation and that empowering women is one of the most effective ways to create change in communities and developing countries,’ Alderman Vos said.
He added that this formed part of his directorate’s responsible tourism focus this year to craft and nurture places that are not only captivating and safe to visit, but also enriching for those who call them home and work there.
‘Our vision is clear: to ensure that Cape Town remains a haven for generations of travellers, irrespective of ability or background, offering a tapestry of nature, cultures and experiences that are beyond compare,’ said Alderman Vos.
