The event, which brought together students who had participated in the City’s Recreation and Parks Department’s Learn-to-Swim programme, was a joyful celebration of their hard work and dedication. The participants demonstrated their newly acquired swimming skills, highlighting the importance of water safety and lifesaving abilities.
‘This initiative is a key part of the Recreation and Parks Department’s basket of services. The ‘Learn-to-Swim’ programme is more than just teaching children how to swim – it is a critical component of our broader strategy for drowning prevention. A total of 36 ‘Learn-to-Swim’ programmes are taking place across the city at numerous municipal swimming pools. We are committed to providing opportunities like this one to empower our residents with the skills they need to stay safe in and around water, while also encouraging healthy lifestyles,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.
‘It’s a privilege to see the success of these young swimmers, and I commend all involved for their dedication. Ensuring every child in Hanover Park learns to swim is a cause close to my heart. I encourage schools and ECDs to get involved so we can equip our children with the skills they need to thrive,’ said Alderman Antonio Van Der Rheede, local Ward Councillor for Ward 47.
The ‘Learn to Swim’ programme is designed to help children in communities across the City gain access to essential swimming and water safety training. The programme not only equips participants with valuable skills, but also helps raise awareness about drowning prevention.
The event also serves as a reminder of the importance of the City’s recreation services, which play an integral role in enhancing the quality of life for residents, promoting an active lifestyle, safe and accessible facilities, and fostering a sense of community pride.
