Fundraising team on 10 day trek to fix youth centre

An intrepid team of fundraisers including well-known author Dana  Snyman, set off on one of South Africa’s toughest hikes – the Tankwa Camino Enduro Walk.  Their aim, besides finishing, is to raise money for the Jannie Roux Child & Youth Care Centre in Barkly West, run by Caritas Community Focus.     The  10-day trek follows South Africa’s longest gravel road from Calvinia to Ceres,  crossing the stark Tankwa Karoo. Participants will sleep overnight in tents and walk an average of around 27 kilometres each day, braving sun, wind, cold, blisters, sore feet, and exhaustion.    Thirteen staff members and friends of the Jannie Roux Centre will be making the 256.6km  trek, joined by Dana Snyman, who has pledged his support to the project from the outset.  Also joining the team is Zeva the dog, who will be helping to keep morale high as well as raising some money herself.     The team from the Jannie Roux Centre decided to raise funds when staff realised that its maintenance costs couldn’t be met without help. The centre provides permanent housing and professional care for 85 children between the ages of six and 18 but is currently in serious need of renovations. Costs are estimated at R250,000 to repair the roof, replace...

Diageo Empowerment Trust calls for applications from sorghum farmers nationwide

The Diageo  Empowerment  Trust  South  Africa (DETSA)  has embarked on a search for ambitious sorghum farmers across South Africa to supply the United National Breweries.The tender is open to emerging black farmers who qualify in line with the generic Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Codes.     In the 2020 programme, 3600 hectares of farming land will be made available to qualifying participants.  DETSA will provide successful applicants with both capital and mentoring in order to maximise their chances of success.The Trust will also help them gain access to new markets to ensure vital cash flow.     DETSA, alongside Diageo Africa affiliates, will facilitate applications through its channel  associations led by the African Farmers Association of South Africa (AFASA) and FNB; and  also supported by the Landbank, Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA), Skudu and  Diageo PLC.  AFASA also represents key association channels such as the National Grain  Association (NGA), Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and others.     Following this application stage, registered farmers will attend compulsory briefings between  30 August and 15 September 2019 in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Free  State, Gauteng and other provinces – details of this process will be made available at a later stage.     During briefings, applicants will be fully informed on tender requirements and the scope of supply. Thereafter, applicants will have to complete a secondary application which will be used to create a shortlist of qualifying participants. Shortlisted applicants will then be asked to provide compliance documents.  ...

Aspiring Change Makers and Activists can now apply for a Canon Collins Scholarship

Scholars committed to creating an open and just society in southern Africa are invited to apply for one of five prestigious scholarships currently available from the Canon Collins Trust, including one fully-funded scholarship to study in Ireland.  Two of the scholarships are in memory of apartheid struggle heroes whose remarkable contributions towards the realisation of democracy are remembered in history: Joel Joffe – Nelson Mandela’s lawyer during the Rivonia Trial; and Kader Asmal, former Minister of Education and leader of the anti-apartheid movement in Ireland.    August is Women’s Month, and the Tom Queba Engineering Scholarship for Social Change supports black female engineers to pursue Master’s degrees in engineering fields.Tom Queba was a leader in the George taxi industry. His passion, commitment, and vision for improved public transport in  George contributed greatly to the achievement of the GO GEORGE bus service. He was tragically killed in 2014, and this scholarship is in his memory. All the scholarships are awarded to scholars who are working towards real social impact – and who will especially benefit from financial support.  For 38 years, the Canon Collins Trust has been building a community of change agents who...
