Belinda Davids Returns Home Triumphant

South African singer Belinda Davids will lead The Bodyguard musical in 2027, bringing her internationally acclaimed voice home for a major South African musical theatre debut.
The Gqeberha-born performer has been cast as superstar singer Rachel Marron in the South African production of The Bodyguard, stepping into the role made famous on screen by Whitney Houston.
The production opens at Artscape in Cape Town on 12 March 2027 before transferring to the Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg from 24 April.

For Davids, the casting represents a significant new chapter in a career that has already taken a South African voice to stages around the world.
She has spent years performing Whitney Houston’s music internationally through The Greatest Love Of All, building a reputation for a four-octave vocal range and performances that have attracted recognition well beyond South Africa.

The Bodyguard will now give her the opportunity to expand that experience into her first musical theatre role, combining singing with acting and dancing.
It is also a distinctly South African production opportunity.
Davids will be supported by an all-South African cast, crew and band, creating work for local performers, musicians and theatre professionals while bringing a major international musical to audiences in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The production is based on the 1992 Hollywood film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, which became one of the highest-grossing films of its era and produced the best-selling soundtrack album of all time.
Its music includes some of Houston’s most recognised songs, including “I Will Always Love You”, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”, “Queen of the Night”, “I Have Nothing”, “Run to You” and “So Emotional”.
For Davids, these are songs that have already shaped much of her international performance career.
Her interpretation of Houston’s music has previously earned praise from Simon Cowell, who watched her compete in Britain’s Got Talent in 2020.
After hearing her perform “One Moment in Time”, Cowell described it as the audition the show had been waiting for that season.

Davids later continued that international momentum in Spain, where she received a Golden Buzzer on Got Talent: All-Stars in 2023 and advanced to the final.
The new role therefore brings together two parts of her career: the music that helped establish her internationally and a new opportunity to develop as a musical theatre performer.
“I have loved Whitney Houston since I was a child, so to have this new opportunity – and fresh, exciting challenges! – is a wonderful blessing. I’m so grateful,” Davids said.
Hazel Feldman of Showtime Management said Davids’ experience with Houston’s catalogue made her a natural choice for one of musical theatre’s most demanding vocal roles.
“This is such a huge, challenging vocal role, and Belinda has built a reputation around the world as one of the best in the business when it comes to giving Whitney Houston’s songs the same incredible power as the originals,” Feldman said.

The production also represents another investment in South Africa’s live entertainment sector.
Showtime Management has increasingly brought large international productions to local stages while incorporating South African performers, musicians and technical teams into those productions.
Recent productions have included Pretty Woman: The Musical and a return season of Mamma Mia!, giving local theatre audiences access to internationally recognised titles without leaving the country.
The Bodyguard extends that momentum into 2027 while placing a South African performer at the centre of the production.

For audiences, Davids’ casting creates a particularly strong local connection to a story and soundtrack known around the world.
For the South African creative sector, it demonstrates how internationally experienced local talent can headline major productions at home while creating opportunities across performance, music, production and technical disciplines.
The show will begin its South African run at Artscape before moving to Johannesburg, giving audiences in both cities an opportunity to experience a production built around one of the country’s most internationally recognised vocal performers.

For Davids, it will mean following in the footsteps of an artist who inspired her from childhood, but this time on a South African stage and surrounded by South African creative talent.
That combination makes The Bodyguard more than another international musical arriving locally.
It is also a homecoming story: a South African singer whose voice has travelled the world returning to lead a major production in front of audiences at home.
