Thousands of inDrive drivers transformed everyday journeys into community impact, raising R80,000 for the Nelson Mandela Foundation through completed rides on Mandela Day.
Thousands of inDrive drivers across South Africa turned an ordinary working day into an act of giving this Mandela Day, collectively raising R80,000 for the Nelson Mandela Foundation through the platform’s “Drive like Mandela” campaign.
On 18 July, inDrive donated R1 to the Nelson Mandela Foundation for every completed ride on its platform. Throughout the day, a live donation tracker on the company’s website displayed the growing number of completed trips and the total amount being raised, allowing South Africans to watch the collective impact unfold in real time.
The campaign was inspired by an often-overlooked part of Nelson Mandela’s own story. Before becoming South Africa’s first democratically elected President, Mandela regularly drove comrades and friends to meetings during the struggle, quietly helping people reach places that mattered.
“Drive like Mandela” was created to honour that same spirit of service by recognising the role drivers play every day as they connect people with work, education, healthcare, family and opportunity.
“Mandela Day is a reminder that some of the most important work is also the most easily overlooked. Our drivers get people to work, to school, to hospitals and back home again, day in and day out, and we wanted to use this Mandela Day to recognise that,” said Ashif Black, Country Representative for inDrive South Africa.
“Through ‘Drive like Mandela’, we’re proud to have contributed to the Nelson Mandela Foundation in honour of the role our drivers play in their communities.”
The Nelson Mandela Foundation said the initiative demonstrated how everyday actions can create meaningful social impact.
“Mandela Day reminds us that lasting change is built through the contributions of ordinary people. By recognising drivers as active citizens and turning each completed trip into support for the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s work, this initiative demonstrates that making a difference is often found in the work we do every day,” said Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile, Head of Communications and Marketing at the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
The campaign forms part of inDrive’s broader global mission to positively impact one billion people by 2030, recognising the contribution drivers make to communities while showing that even a single journey can help create lasting social impact.
