FNB Commits R2 Million Relief

FNB has committed R2 million in disaster relief funding, partnering with ForAfrika NPC to support more than 1,300 flood-affected households across the Western Cape.

The funding comes in response to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that swept across parts of the province last month, leaving many communities facing significant hardship. Homes were damaged, roads and communication infrastructure were disrupted, and thousands of residents were left without access to essential resources as floodwaters impacted vulnerable settlements.

Through its Disaster Relief Fund, FNB is providing immediate humanitarian assistance designed to help affected families meet their most urgent needs while beginning the process of recovery and rebuilding.

The intervention will focus on communities identified through on-the-ground assessments conducted following the flooding. Priority areas include Lwandle, Nomzamo, Strand, Mbokweni, Valhalla Park, Mitchells Plain, Philippi, Du Noon, Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Gugulethu and KTC, where many residents experienced extensive damage to homes and personal belongings.

The R2 million commitment is being delivered in partnership with ForAfrika NPC, one of Africa’s largest humanitarian and development organisations. The partnership allows relief efforts to be coordinated efficiently, ensuring support reaches vulnerable households as quickly as possible.

Relief packages include food hampers, blankets, tarpaulins, hygiene products and baby care packs. These items have been identified as critical needs for families who have lost possessions or whose living conditions have been compromised by flood damage.

For many households, the support provides immediate relief at a time when recovery can feel overwhelming. Beyond the physical damage caused by flooding, natural disasters often place additional pressure on already vulnerable communities that may be facing unemployment, food insecurity and other socio-economic challenges.

Andre Prinsloo, Head of Shared Prosperity and Care at FNB, said the bank believes supporting communities during times of crisis is a responsibility that extends beyond traditional banking services.

“FNB continues to play a vital role in supporting communities during times of crisis. Through its dedicated Disaster Relief Fund, the bank provides immediate and meaningful assistance to those affected by unforeseen events. We remain committed to standing alongside impacted communities because we believe that everyone deserves care, support and dignity during challenging times.”

The intervention forms part of FNB’s broader approach to social impact, which focuses on supporting community resilience and responding to urgent humanitarian needs when disasters strike.

South Africa has experienced an increasing number of severe weather events in recent years, highlighting the growing importance of coordinated disaster response efforts. Flooding, storms and other climate-related incidents often have the greatest impact on lower-income communities where housing and infrastructure are more vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.

Prinsloo said meaningful recovery requires collaboration between multiple sectors.

“Through our initiatives, our aim is to ensure that affected communities receive immediate and meaningful support to help them navigate this difficult period. We believe that collaboration between the private sector, government and civil society is essential to strengthening our country’s resilience against the impact of natural disasters.”

The partnership between FNB and ForAfrika demonstrates how businesses and non-profit organisations can work together to address urgent community needs while creating a coordinated response that maximises impact.

While relief efforts focus on addressing immediate challenges, they also play an important role in helping communities regain stability and begin rebuilding their lives. Access to food, shelter materials and essential household supplies can provide a foundation from which families can start to recover.

As recovery efforts continue across the Western Cape, FNB says it remains committed to supporting affected communities and working alongside trusted partners to deliver assistance where it is needed most.

The intervention serves as a reminder that during times of crisis, collaboration and community support can make a meaningful difference in helping vulnerable families navigate difficult circumstances and move towards recovery.
