Gautrain has marked sixteen years of operation, recording more than 216 million passenger trips while connecting commuters to jobs, education and opportunity.
The Gautrain has reached a significant milestone, celebrating 16 years of service since its official launch on 8 June 2010.
Originally introduced ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the rapid rail system has evolved into one of South Africa’s most recognisable public transport success stories. Over the past 16 years, the network has recorded more than 216 million passenger trips, helping millions of commuters access employment, education, business and leisure opportunities across Gauteng.
Today, the Gautrain operates an 80-kilometre rail network connecting 10 stations, supported by an integrated bus and midi-bus feeder service that extends accessibility to surrounding communities.
Beyond providing mobility, the Gautrain has played an important role in supporting economic activity and reducing congestion in one of Africa’s busiest economic regions.
The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) highlighted the system’s continued evolution through innovation and partnerships, including its collaboration with the minibus taxi industry through the Gautrain Midi-bus Service and the introduction of smart Driver’s Licence Testing Centres at selected stations.
In line with efforts to make public transport more inclusive, Gautrain launched the KlevaMova affordability programme in 2025. The initiative offers qualifying passengers a 50% discount on train fares and targets lower-income households, scholars, pensioners and SASSA disability grant recipients.
According to the GMA, KlevaMova now accounts for approximately 11% of all Gautrain passenger trips, demonstrating growing demand for affordable transport solutions.
Gautrain Management Agency Board Chairperson Professor Mfanelo Ntsobi said the rail system continues to represent a long-term investment in infrastructure that delivers value beyond transportation.
“Gautrain stands as a lasting legacy of what South Africa can achieve when it invests boldly in infrastructure that serves people for generations. It is more than a transport system — it is a catalyst for economic activity and sustainable mobility, connecting people to opportunities every day,” he said.
As Gautrain enters its next phase, the GMA is overseeing the transition to a new concessionaire while maintaining uninterrupted operations and service standards.
The rail system will continue operating under a Public-Private Partnership model, which has underpinned its success since inception.
A major milestone in the project’s history was achieved when the Gauteng Provincial Government completed repayment of the original construction debt, securing full ownership of the multibillion-rand transport asset.
Sixteen years after transforming public transport in Gauteng, Gautrain remains focused on delivering safe, reliable and efficient mobility while supporting economic growth and social connectivity across the province.
