SABC1 is marking the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising with a Youth Month campaign that celebrates leadership, civic participation and youth empowerment.
The broadcaster has launched its 2026 Youth Month campaign, The Source of Youth Courage, under the theme #MzansiYouthUnstoppable. The initiative forms part of SABC1’s broader positioning as The Source of Mzansi and aims to honour the legacy of the Class of 1976 while inspiring a new generation of South Africans to shape the country’s future.
The campaign recognises the role young people continue to play in driving social change, entrepreneurship, community development and democratic participation.
Throughout June, SABC1 will spotlight stories of courage across generations through a combination of television programming, community activations and digital engagement designed to encourage young South Africans to become active participants in society.
Among the featured programmes is Beats For My Peeps, a voter education reality series that uses music and youth culture to promote democratic participation ahead of South Africa’s upcoming municipal elections.
The channel will also broadcast 50 Years of June 1976, a six-part documentary series exploring the people, events and legacy of the historic youth uprising that helped reshape South Africa’s future.
Entrepreneurship and innovation will take centre stage through It Started With A Thought, a reality-documentary series profiling young South Africans whose ideas and determination are creating solutions to challenges facing their communities.
In addition to its television content, SABC1 will support youth-focused events including the GradeTown Festival in Johannesburg and a youth empowerment initiative hosted by the Enoch Mathebula Foundation and London Institute of Skills Development in Polokwane.
The campaign also highlights the importance of skills development, leadership and active citizenship as South Africa continues to address challenges such as youth unemployment and economic inclusion.
Joining the initiative as Youth Month Ambassador is content creator and cultural commentator Madala TK, who will help amplify messages around self-belief, youth empowerment and civic engagement through television, radio and digital platforms.
While commemorating the courage of the young people who marched in 1976, the campaign also seeks to recognise the many ways young South Africans continue to contribute to society today through innovation, creativity, leadership and community action.
Fifty years after the Soweto Uprising, SABC1’s Youth Month campaign serves as a reminder that the courage displayed by the youth of 1976 remains a powerful force in shaping South Africa’s future.
