Tiger Brands Powers Greener Manufacturing

Tiger Brands has signed a renewable energy wheeling agreement aimed at reducing carbon emissions and accelerating cleaner manufacturing operations across its Gauteng production facilities.

Tiger Brands has signed a landmark electricity wheeling agreement with renewable energy supplier Apollo Africa as part of its transition toward cleaner energy sources across its manufacturing operations.

The agreement, set to commence in 2028, will enable Tiger Brands to purchase renewable energy generated off-site and transmit it through South Africa’s national electricity grid to selected manufacturing facilities in Gauteng.

Also known as “power wheeling”, the process allows electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind farms to be supplied to businesses through the existing grid infrastructure.

According to Tiger Brands Chief Manufacturing Officer Praveen Balgobind, the initiative forms part of the company’s broader sustainability and environmental stewardship strategy.

“Importantly, our business grows, cost efficiency is maximised, all while reducing our carbon footprint. This is a clear example of how we are working across our value chain to bring the best value and affordable nutrition to consumers while reducing the impact of our operations on the environment,” said Balgobind.

Tiger Brands facilities supplied through the Ekurhuleni Municipality network are expected to receive approximately 60% of their electricity from wheeled renewable energy by 2028.

The agreement supports Tiger Brands’ 2030 Environmental Stewardship targets, which include:

  • Reducing water and energy intensity by 30%
  • Reducing carbon emissions by 30%
  • Achieving 31% renewable electrical energy usage
  • Reaching zero waste to landfill across all sites
  • Reducing production food waste by 50%
  • Ensuring 80% of plastic packaging is recyclable or compostable
  • Including 25% recycled content in PET packaging

Apollo Africa CEO Nico de Bruyn described wheeling as one of the most effective renewable energy tools currently available to South African businesses.

“Tiger Brands is deploying it exactly as it should be, strategically, at scale, and anchored to a clear decarbonisation roadmap,” he said.

He added that the partnership demonstrates how renewable energy solutions can support industrial growth while improving sustainability performance.

The agreement represents another example of how major South African manufacturers are increasingly adopting renewable energy solutions to improve resilience, manage long-term energy costs and reduce environmental impact.
