Prof Renier Coetzee: Leading with Heart, Healing with Science

Associate Professor Renier Coetzee, newly appointed President of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA), is a dynamic force in pharmacy, public health and community upliftment. With a career rooted in service and a leadership philosophy that asks, “How can I help?”, Prof Coetzee exemplifies the kind of compassionate, visionary leadership that inspires change across sectors.

Prof Coetzee said, “I am honoured to represent our profession nationally and globally. This work is critical for expanding Pharmacy’s role, building stronger interprofessional partnerships, and delivering service innovations that embrace new technologies and improve healthcare access,” he explained.

At the University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) School of Pharmacy, he teaches in the Postgraduate Diploma and Master of Public Health programmes, blending technical expertise with a strong sense of social responsibility. His academic journey includes a BPharm and MPharm from North-West University and a PharmD from Rhodes University. His research spans antimicrobial stewardship, rational medicine use and pharmaceutical education, with global collaborations including with the WHO and the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp.

Prof Coetzee’s impact extends far beyond the lecture hall. As Vice-Chair of Touching Nations and advisor to TB Proof, he champions health equity in communities like Delft, Cape Town. He’s a vocal advocate for ethical healthcare, challenging commercial influences that undermine public health. His leadership has earned him accolades such as the UWC Community Engagement Award and the Western Cape Department of Health Appreciation Award.

Yet, behind the professional accolades is a man deeply connected to nature, family and curiosity. Prof Coetzee finds joy in gardening, reading and exploring the outdoors with his four children. Whether snorkelling in tidal pools or searching for sea creatures along Cape Town’s beaches, he embraces the spirit of discovery—an ethos he brings into every classroom and boardroom.
