175 young South Africans marked a major milestone this week as they graduated from the Salesian Institute Youth Projects’ NEETs Employment Programme at Old Mutual’s Mutualpark campus in Cape Town.
The graduates received SETA-accredited certificates in New Venture Creation, Wholesale and Retail, and Solar Photovoltaic Mounter courses — marking a major milestone in youth development and empowerment.
The NEETs (Not in Employment, Education or Training) Programme was envisioned by Fr Pat Naughton in 2020 and officially launched in 2021. Since then, it has grown into a dynamic intervention offering second chances to unemployed youth, particularly those from vulnerable communities.
Initially a 12-month course focused on entrepreneurship through New Venture Creation, the programme has since expanded to include a 6- or 12-month Solar Photovoltaic Mounter/Installer course. This addition prepares young people for opportunities in South Africa’s fast-growing renewable energy sector.
“This is about restoring dignity and hope,” said Fr François Dufour, CEO of SIYP. “We believe in the resilience and potential of every young person who walks through our doors. These graduates are now equipped with the skills to create opportunities, not just for themselves, but for their communities too.”
Programme Manager Gabriel Hamuy echoed this sentiment, highlighting the real impact of the initiative: “We’ve seen real transformation through this programme. Many of our graduates are already launching micro-enterprises or entering the workforce with confidence. It’s incredibly rewarding to see their growth and determination.”
Hosted in partnership with Old Mutual, the graduation ceremony drew proud families, donors, and community partners. Together, they celebrated not only the accomplishments of the graduates, but the resilience and hard work that got them there.
The Salesian Institute Youth Projects, a Cape Town-based organisation with a 115-year history, continues to provide education, psychosocial support, and practical skills training to young people. The NEETs Youth Employment Programme is one of several initiatives aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty and building brighter futures.
