Durban – A number of former rugby players have added their names to the entry for the aQuellé Tour Durban road races on Sunday 28 November, eager to throw their weight behind the annual fundraiser for The Domino Foundation.
World Cup winning flyhalf Butch James kicked off the project for the SA Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) by agreeing to ride in a batch for the 45km ride with East Coast Radio breakfast show presenter Darren Maule.
SARLA and The Cell C Sharks have a long-running association with The Domino Foundation, and once he put the word out to many of his former colleagues, the response was immediate and enthusiastic.
Former Sharks and Springbok star Brent Russell quickly volunteered to join the batch. “Any time we can get involved with an event like the aQuellé Tour Durban and assist a charity, we jump at it,” said Russell
“The Domino Foundation does amazing work in the communities north of Durban and SARLA has been involved with them in past,” he added. “We helped with food parcel distribution during the hard lockdown.
Another Sharks and Bok back Trevor Halstead added is name to the entry for the batch, as one of the former rugby players who had turned to regular cycling to stay fit after his rugby career has come to an end.
“I am pretty sure I am up for the 45km ride, especially as I am meant to be training for the Epic,” he said.
The players have agreed to make 50 places in their batch available to fans who want to ride with the rugby players and Darren Maule in the first batch of the 45km race.
“Gee, that will be exciting if there are people with such good long term memories that want to ride with us,” said Halstead. “Let’s use it to get out onto the road to enjoy being out riding together, and add some money to The Domino Foundation.
The places in that batch will be added on a first come first served basis via the race website to anyone who has already entered the 45km ride, and makes a donation of at least R100 to the Domino Foundation.
