World Class artists come to Cape Town for mentorship programme

Rolex announced the mentors for the 2020/2021 Rolex Arts Initiative at the Baxter Theatre Centre in Cape Town. This year’s program will be featuring Filmmaker, Spike Lee,Phyllida Lloyd who will be focusing on theatre, Lin-Manuel Miranda who will focus on the open category and Carrie Mae Weems will focus on visual arts.

The world-renowned innovators will each spend the next two years in close collaboration with an outstanding young artist with whom they will exchange ideas and ensure that artistry at the highest level is transmitted across generations and geographic boundaries.

Rolex Arts Initiative is acclaimed as the world’s most successful mentor and proteìgeì programme where and African artists in a variety of fields have benefited. Previous success stories include Londiwe Khoza, Cape Town Dancer was mentored in 2018 by Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin. Khoza joined the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv for the mentoring, and still lives and works in Israel today.

“The four new mentors who will be joining the initiative’s community of creative greats have broken new ground in their respective fields.”We look forward to the impact they will have on their protégés, as they pass on their devotion to their art in this cross-generational exchange,” said Rebecca Irvin, Programme Director.
