Wikipedia Marks 25 Years Public Knowledge

Wikipedia marked its 25th anniversary today as the world’s largest online information resource, underscoring its role as critical digital infrastructure in an increasingly fragmented and AI-driven information environment.

Operated by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia remains one of the most heavily used sources of verified information globally, with nearly 15 billion page views per month across more than 300 languages. Unlike other top-ten global websites, it is not commercially owned and relies on a global network of approximately 250,000 volunteer editors to create, review and fact-check content.

The Wikimedia Foundation launched a yearlong “Wikipedia 25” campaign to highlight the platform’s evolution, governance model and future sustainability. The campaign includes a new video docuseries profiling volunteer editors, a digital time capsule documenting key moments in Wikipedia’s history, and public engagement initiatives aimed at encouraging continued participation.

Wikipedia has become a foundational data source for search engines, voice assistants and generative AI systems, making its reliability a matter of public interest. The platform is one of the most frequently used datasets in training large language models, increasing scrutiny on how its content is accessed, reused and funded.

In response, the Wikimedia Foundation has expanded formal partnerships with technology companies through Wikimedia Enterprise, a paid service that provides large-scale content access while directing revenue back into the nonprofit’s operations. Recent partners include Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta, and several AI-focused companies.

The Foundation has also adopted an AI strategy focused on supporting human editors rather than automating content creation. The strategy prioritises tools that improve moderation, translation and accessibility while maintaining human oversight of editorial decisions.

Efforts to address global knowledge gaps remain a core focus, particularly in underrepresented regions and languages. Volunteer editors from Africa, including Nigeria, are featured in the anniversary campaign, highlighting the role of local contributors in documenting cultural, linguistic and historical knowledge often absent from global platforms.

Since its launch in 2001, Wikipedia has navigated regulatory challenges, funding pressures and misinformation risks while maintaining its open-access model. Its continued operation depends on volunteer participation, donor funding and institutional partnerships.

The Wikimedia Foundation confirmed that anniversary activities will continue throughout 2026, with public events, digital initiatives and community engagement planned globally.
